Macroeconomics Public Lecture: Indonesia's Economic Challenges Amidst Global Uncertainty
Jakarta, Wednesday, April 23, 2025 — The Development Economics Study Program, FEB UIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta held a public lecture with the theme "Indonesia's Economic Challenges Amidst Global Uncertainty" by presenting the Chief Executive of the Deposit Insurance Corporation (LPS) Dr. Lana Soelistianingsih, SE., MA moderated by Najwa Khairina, MA, one of the home base lecturers in the Development Economics Study Program. This Macroeconomics Public Lecture took place in the Theater Room 2, 5th Floor, FEB Building, Jalan Ibnu Sina. This Public Lecture aims to equip students with a comprehensive understanding of global economic conditions and how to respond to them critically and provide solutions.
The event was opened by the Vice Dean for Student Affairs and Cooperation, Dr. Asyari Hasan, M.Ag accompanied by the Head of the Development Economics Study Program, Dr. Arief Fitrijanto, M.Si and Secretary of the Study Program, Shelby Widodo, M.Sc as well as lecturers and hundreds of students in the Development Economics Study Program, FEB UIN Jakarta.
In her presentation, Dr. Lana explained that the world economy is in a vortex of uncertainty due to the trade policies of the American President, Donald Trump, especially through the implementation of high trade tariffs that have triggered a global trade war. The impact of this policy is felt in Indonesia, especially through pressure on exports, commodity prices, and the potential for a decrease in foreign investment.
Dr. Lana emphasized the importance of maintaining Indonesia's trade balance surplus. Although global commodity prices have weakened, Indonesia continues to demonstrate economic resilience with stable GDP growth and relatively controlled inflation. In addition to global challenges, this public lecture also reviewed internal challenges such as the high rate of youth unemployment, the dominance of informal workers, and changes in consumer behavior among the millennial and Gen Z generations.
In closing, Dr. Lana invited students not to be passive in facing this reality. Students need to actively equip themselves with relevant skills (upskilling), build professional networks early on, and contribute through research, internships, and other productive activities. Amidst technological disruption and economic challenges, the younger generation is required to be adaptive, critical, and innovative.
He also emphasized the importance of synergy between fiscal, monetary, and real sector policies to maintain national economic stability. Indonesia also needs to continue to strengthen bilateral and multilateral cooperation, especially with strategic partner countries. This public lecture has become part of the commitment of FEB UIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta in expanding students' insights into macro and global economic issues that have a direct impact on the future of the nation.
